Very basic knowledge

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Pre-Intermediate

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Intermediate

Can deal with most normal, everyday situations

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Advanced 1

Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Advanced 2

Can express yourself fluently and spontaneously

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Fluency

Almost a native speaker

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

Section Four: Important Information

Please read the information below - it's all the important facts. If there's anything you are still unsure about do not hesitate to email us or call us directly.

Evening foreign language courses will run for 30 weeks (three terms of 10 weeks). Precise details for each course (times, dates, classroom locations etc.) will be supplied in advance of the course and on receipt of payment.

Evening courses will all be held at Redland High School, Redland Court Road, Redland, Bristol BS6 7EF. For directions see the map.

Each 10 week term will have a one week, half term break to coincide with the school term.

We will confirm every individual enrollment. If you want to study on more than one course you will have to apply separately for each course.

We will endeavour to ensure every student is placed in a class that is appropriate for their level. To maintain standards we will aim for class sizes to be of 8-12.

There will be no formal assessments as part of our standard courses but students will receive a certificate confirming that they have followed and completed their course successfully. To receive this, learners must attend at least 8 out of 10 classes per term.

If you want or require a formal assessment this can be arranged on an individual basis but this is not included in the standard course price and structure. For more details please ask your teacher or contact the school directly.

Section Five: Payment

Cost per term: £120.00
(10 weeks, 90 minute class per week)

To secure your place complete the application form as soon as possible.

Once your application has been processed you will be invoiced accordingly.

Payment has to be received prior to the first class of each term. You will be invoiced for each term in full.

We do not give refunds for missed classes. We do not give refunds should you withdraw after the beginning of a term. We do not transfer enrolment fees from one term to another.
